Keeping warm in the winter months need not be hard, by following these 10 simple tips you will easily be able to optimise your insulation and keep the cold out.

1. Wear a hat! This is the easiest yet most effective way to stay warm. Up to half of your body heat can be lost through the head, with estimates putting the actual figure at around 40 – 45% which is a highly significant amount. So just by putting on a hat, (preferably woolen as this will keep you warm even when wet) you will be well on your way to winning the struggle to keep out the cold.

2. Layer your clothing. If you  depend on a single bulky jacket to keep you warm then think again. The best option to take is to wear numerous but thinner layers with the reasoning behind this being that it will help to trap the heat against your body far better than a single layer. If you you overheat it will also be easier to remove a layer or two of clothing and thus regulate your body heat easily.

3. Your final layer of clothing should be not only waterproof but windproof to optimise heat retention.

4. Opt for a coat which has Velcro fastenings as well as a zip as this will further help to keep in the heat.

5. Wear waterproof shoes or boots. The feet are extremities which can radiate a significant amount of heat and particularly if they get wet you can become cold quite quickly.

6. Wear woolen socks, if your feet do happen to get wet this will still offer a good level of insulation.

7. Stay out of the wind if possible as this can sap your body heat like nothing else and make the temperature feel considerable lower than it is!

8. Wear gloves but make sure they are not only waterproof but also breathable. Again the hands are extremities which can lose alot of heat if not properly insulated.

9. Try to avoid sweating as when the moisture evaporates from your body you will lose vital body heat. Refer to tip 2 to help avoid this.

10. If all else fails think some nice warm thoughts, sometimes that’s all we’ve got!!!
